Friday Afternoon Club

Community Living Alternatives, Inc. has always prided itself on going that extra step to help the people we serve feel included and accepted, however we never realized just how much more we could do. In 2006, we began implementing Essential Lifestyle Plans and began learning so much more about the dreams and interests of the people we serve. We felt we could make some, if not all, of these wistful dreams a reality. We began by simply talking about the things they have always wanted to do, or things that they really enjoyed but never got to do again. The resulting list was long and varied, but the CLA team recognized that month-by-month, we could make all of these things happen.

Thus, the Friday Afternoon Club was born! We have had great success and turn-outs to our events and activities. We’ve strapped on snowshoes, painted pottery, learned karate and self defense, ridden a horse drawn sleigh, traveled on the Georgetown Loop Railroad, been to baseball games, had picnics and a long list of others. We continue to receive requests and find new and exciting things to do.

Cooking Class with Betty!!
3/12/10 Meet at CLA at 11am
Meet our newest staff member, Betty, if you haven’t already. Betty will teach you how to make some of your favorite finger foods, such as pot -stickers, dips, fruit skewers and more!   Make your very own mints from scratch, and bag them up to take home for yourself or someone who has done something nice for you.

April FAC
Boot Scootin’ At the Grizzly Rose
4/9/10 (tentative) leave CLA at 11am
Test your riding skills and take a spin on the mechanical bull. Learn some fancy footwork with Dennis, the Grizzly Rose dance instructor and enjoy dancing with your favorite lad or lady. Don’t worry! We won’t let you go hungry! After you’ve danced to all your favorite country tunes, kick off your boots and sit down for a cowboy BBQ lunch.

Gardening Class with Nick’s Garden Center and Farmer’s Market.
Date TBD Leave CLA at 11am
Start your very own vegetable or flower garden with our friends at Nicks. Wander the isles of beautiful plants and choose one that you like best. Pick out a pot that catches your eye and staff will help you add fertilizer, soil and water. Get a quick lesson on how to take care of your plant. After cleaning up, we will head to a local vegetarian restaurant where you can fill your plate with the healthful veggies you just potted yourself.

Hope Floats Pontoon Ride and Fishing Trip
Date TBD Leave CLA at 9am
Join us for a day on the lake! You can choose to just relax and enjoy the warm sun, or you can try to catch your dinner! This trip is accessible for all, no matter what kind of sea legs you have! CLA will be providing a hearty picnic lunch with fresh fruit and plenty of drinks, but be sure to bring your hat, sunscreen, non-slip shoes and bottle for water. This trip will be significantly longer than other FAC’s. Expect to arrive back at CLA around 3pm.

Overnight Camping with CLA staff
Date TBD Leave On Thursday evening from CLA.
Dig out those old campfire songs and join us for a night under the stars. Help set up your tent, and fluff out your pillow, then join us around a toasty campfire. We have some great campfire recipes to share, and we will be roasting marshmallows as a midnight snack. Wake up with the sun and spend the morning enjoying Betty’s “breakfast in a bag”. Depending on interest, we can go for a short hike, or visit the lake for a dip.

Blackhawk Gambling Trip
Date TBD Leave CLA at 10am
Join Rhonda, Charles and Debi as they show you the secrets to winning at Blackhawk! Play the slots or any other game that catches your fancy. Enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Even if you go home with empty pockets, your belly is sure to be full! Bring your pennies for penny slots!
Cost $25 (includes transportation, lunch and gambling $, may bring additional cash if okay’d by IDT)
